John LEmont

GENERAL MANAGER

John Lemont is the new General Manager and Lead Instructor of the Watersound Club Sporting Preserve and a seasoned expert in the world of shooting sports.

John began his career as a commissioned officer in the United States Army then went on to join the Rhode Island State Police where he retired as a member of the Command Staff. John was also a practicing attorney prior to retirement.

His lifelong love of the shooting sports continued to grow as he became the head guide and bird dog trainer at an exclusive hunting and fishing lodge in the stunning landscapes of Patagonia, Argentina, where he honed his skills in the pursuit of wild quail and managing a string of bird dogs amidst some of the most challenging terrains.

Further solidifying his expertise, John undertook an Advanced Bird Dog Training Apprenticeship with the renowned Ronnie Smith Kennels in Pawhuska, Oklahoma, gaining in-depth knowledge and hands-on experience in bird dog training techniques.

John is a passionate and experienced bird hunter, with a wide range of expertise spanning upland, tower, driven, and waterfowl hunting. His commitment to the sport is evident in his dedication to teaching inexperienced wing shooters, using his personal dogs to enhance the learning experience while placing an unwavering emphasis on safety.

As a National Sporting Clays Association (NSCA) certified instructor, John brings a wealth of knowledge about shooting sporting clays and enjoys engaging in both group and private lessons, ensuring that each participant, regardless of their experience level, leaves with improved skills and a deeper appreciation for the game.

His instructional prowess was further developed as a certified instructor in both shotgun sports and fly casting, having taught at multiple venues, both public and private, over many years.

John’s technical skills extend to the operational aspects of shooting sports, to include target setting for sporting clays courses and equipment maintenance.

This blend of practical knowledge and field experience makes John Lemont a pivotal figure at Watersound Club Sporting Preserve, where he leads by example, ensuring every Club Member enjoys a top-tier sporting experience in a safe and welcoming environment.

Members can book their time on the course in the Member App. A variety of private and group lessons, clinics, and league play is planned for the near future. More details on these classes and more coming soon!

Where is the Watersound Club Sporting Preserve located?

The sporting clays course is located north of Shark’s Tooth Golf Course. The Sporting Preserve is serviced out of the Shark’s Tooth Clubhouse, where Members check-in for their round, rent guns, purchase ammo and retail items, and check out their Kawasaki Mule.

What can I expect when I show up for a round on the sporting clays course?

Members should arrive at the Shark’s Tooth Golf Shop at your designated time. From there, you will be escorted approximately 1.5 miles to the sporting clays course on Side Camp Road via Kawasaki Mules. You will be guided through the course by a range officer or trapper who will release targets for you while prioritizing safety.

Do I need to bring anything with me to the sporting clays course?

All necessary equipment is kept on site and available for use.  Shotguns, ammunition, transportation, and targets are available for rent/purchase. Experienced shooters may bring their own shotguns if they so choose.*

Cold bottles of water are kept on the mules and are always accessible. It is important to stay hydrated!

How do I book the sporting clays course?

Booking for the sporting clays course is done through the Member app. It is currently found under Tee Times > Course > Sporting Clays. Current availability is for groups of up to four people at either 8 AM or 1 PM, Wednesday through Sunday.

I’ve never been on a sporting clays course. How can I learn about the sport before I try the Watersound Club Sporting Preserve?

Private lessons are also available, and reservations can be made based upon availability by contacting the GM or emailing SportingPreserve@stjoe.com.

Can I bring my young children with me to try the sporting clays course?

Children should have sufficient upper body strength and maturity to handle a firearm. Although there are exceptions, generally we start shooters no younger than 14 years of age to ensure they have a positive experience.

What should I wear to the sporting clays course? Is there a dress code?

Dress comfortably and be prepared to be in the sun for two hours (hats, sunglasses, sunscreen, etc.). There is not a formal dress code, however, open-toe shoes are prohibited.
